The kea is the only alpine parrot in the world - cheeky, curious, and a real character. On the ground it looks fairly ordinary, a scruffy olive-green. But the moment it opens its wings and takes flight, a hidden blaze of colours flashes out - colour you'd never have guessed was there.

That's why I had to paint it. This one came to life as I'm settling into life as a full-time artist - finally painting straight from the heart, no holding back, nothing dialled down to fit anyone else. The kea only shows its true colours when it flies. And for the first time, I feel I am too.

The koru curling through its wings are the energy and freedom of being in full flight, and the growth and new life that comes when we finally let ourselves rise. It's the feeling of being fully, unapologetically yourself.

I called it 'I am Kea' because that's the whole heart of it. My hope is that it hangs on your wall as a quiet daily reminder - that your brightest colours are already in you, and they come out every time you're brave enough to truly be yourself.
