There’s something so uplifting about the flash of a kingfisher’s wings — that spark of colour and energy that brightens the day in an instant. Wings of Wonder was born from a quiet month I spent in Opua, where I was lucky enough to share my days with two cheeky kingfishers. I’d watch them chatter on the fence, swoop across the garden, and hunt for worms on the lawn. Their presence brought such lightness and joy, I couldn’t help but paint one.
This piece captures that same feeling — the sense of freedom, movement, and vibrance that the kingfisher embodies. The lines and shapes in this piece flow with the same sense of movement and life those kingfishers have, and the vibrant colours radiate the joy they bring when we take a moment to really connect with nature.
